Youth News

· 2009 St. Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine 4th Annual Essay Contest: Open to all high school students. No entry fee. First prize is a $500 savings bond and a laptop computer. The deadline for the 1,000 word essay is Nov. 16, 2009. The St. Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine is one of the five institutions of our Greek Orthodox Archdiocese in America. The shrine is located in the Avero House, in our nation’s oldest city, St. Augustine, Fl. The original structure was built in 1740. In 1777 it became a respite for the survivors of the New Smyrna Colony. The Shrine opened in 1982 as a memorial to the 500 Greeks who were part of that endeavor. They came from Smyrna, Santorini, Crete and Mani in 1768. The Shrine was also built in honor of all our ancestors who came to America in search of a better life. The chapel, with its Byzantine icons, expresses the theology of the Greek Orthodox Church. Today we proclaim our Orthodox Faith and witness our Hellenic culture to all who enter the colonial Spanish home. The interior belies the exterior, sharing the message of the Good News and True Faith with our visitors. Write your thoughts in essay form. What is the purpose of this witnessing, this outreach and how do you witness the Orthodox Faith in your life? If you are interested in submitting an essay, please see the flyer on the bulletin board or http://stphotios.com/news.html.

· GOYA News:  Parents, please let me know if you wish to participate in upcoming GOYA events as chaperones or volunteers or if you have any questions or input about our GOYA program. We encourage feedback and
participation from all parents and youth of our parish. For more information or if you would like to join our Youth Ministry Team please contact. greeksophia@gmail.com or 970-635-9889
